Copaken Brooks, RetroPros win Historic Kansas City’s Outstanding Work by Craftsperson award
The Historic Kansas City (HKC) honored Copaken Brooks and RetroPros with an excellence award in the Outstanding Work by Craftsperson category for our role in the restoration of the Arthur Kraft Mosaic Mural rescue at the Former Board of Education Building (1211 McGee) during the demolition of the building.
In September 2019 Copaken Brooks purchased the historic KC Board of Education building with plans to demolish it. Attached to the west wall was the Arthur Kraft Mosaic Mural, which Copaken Brooks worked to remove with little-to-no damage.
The excellence award recognizes high-quality work that demonstrates an understanding of the principles and practice of preservation techniques on a specific project. The nomination reflects the obstacles faced by the craftsperson in performing the work, innovative techniques or materials used in the project and the process involved in the work, including research where applicable.
